Beautiful, wild-child Nicole Tepper is hit by a car and left for dead. But when she wakes the next morning, Nicole finds herself in bed without a scratch. Perhaps she was more intoxicated than usual, as her mother is giving her the silent treatment and her friends are ignoring her as well.

Things take a turn for the weird when Nicole soon discovers she is actually hovering between life and death. Her body is lying in the forest while her spirit is searching for anyone who can hear her. Unfortunately the only person who can is Dale Finnigan, the guy she publicly humiliated with a sharp-tongued insult that has left him branded.

Desperate, Nicole has no choice but to haunt Dale and convince the freaked-out senior to help her. Will he find her body before it’s too late? Or will the guy who tried to kill her with his car, beat him there and finish her off before anyone finds out?

(Betwixt #0.5)
Publication date: September 17th, 2013

Dale Finnigan is a teenage rebel; he lives for parties, girls and joy riding in stolen cars. In spite of his uptight parents’ constant warnings and lectures, he continues to run wild. His crazy lifestyle is the only way he can live and feel free… Until his reckless behavior takes him down a path where there is no going back.

In this prequel to BETWIXT, find out who Dale Finnigan was before he became known as“scar-face”—the unassuming hero everyone underestimates.

Beyond  by Melissa Pearl
(Betwixt #1.5)
Publication date: October 20th 2013

Have you ever been so in love with someone, but not had the courage to tell them?

Nicole Tepper is that girl. She loves her boyfriend Dale, but fearing rejection, keeps her feelings buried deep. She can’t even let on how heartbroken she is when Dale begins applying for colleges thousands of miles away from her; never even whispering a word about how much she wishes he would stay close.

But, when Dale is rejected from Columbia University in NYC, due to a police record that follows him wherever he goes, Nicole soon discovers that love can drive her to do things she never thought possible.

There’s more than one way to say, I love you and Nicole Tepper is about to prove to Dale that she loves him beyond all common sense.

My Review

Before was my favorite of the three, although I wish I hadn’t read it first. Betwixt would have been more mysterious if I didn’t have all the background information beforehand. It was, by far, the most mature of the series, in that there is a fair amount of sex, alcohol and criminal behavior. It is Dale’s past, leading up to Betwixt, and it takes the reader a great length of the way to understanding him.

Both Before and Beyond are both short reads, easily finished within the day, and worth it to complete the story. Beyond, though my least favorite of the three, really does trim all those loose threads still hanging from Betwixt. You really can’t have the WHOLE picture without it. MUST read!

Betwixt is the bulk of the overall story, as the full length novel. It is from Nicole’s POV, though she isn’t really the most likable of characters. Lets just say that at the beginning, she has a lot of room to grow! Luckily, Dale is so great he’s able to balance out the cast. Throughout the book, there is a lot of lessons to be learned for teens. The moral of the story was staring me in the face the entire time, but I still really enjoyed the story. There is also a certain religious aspect to the plot, but it wasn’t overpowering. It’s more a case of right vs wrong, instead of Heaven vs Hell. It has the kind of message that parents could easily support, but be hip enough for kids to enjoy. While there is sex, alcohol use and criminal behavior, this series is easily Mom approved.

According to the back of the book and Melissa Pearl’s site, $1 for every purchase of Betwixt goes to Love146 which is a charity working towards ending child trafficking and exploitation. This is an amazing reason to buy the book, even if a great story isn’t reason enough for you.

While reading Before, this song was constantly running through my head. For all the kids and teens who wish they could more easily talk to their parents, I dedicate this song.
