Hi, I’m Inga from Me and Reading book blog and I am happy to visit Contagious Reads. Welcome toΒ The Book Blogger Buzz Tour! My stop here today is one of the many you will see during the tour! I think it’s a great opportunity to meet other bloggers! The Book Blogger Buzz Tour is organized by Rachel from Parajunkee.com and there are many wonderful blogs participating who each will share their thoughts on quite interesting topics! Follow the tour and I promise, if you are fan of reading and blogging, you won’t be disappointed!

Why are you a reader?

My first reaction to the question “Why do you read?” (and I do get this question a lot!) is thinking that it’s quite obvious, isn’t it? How can any person knowing me even consider asking this? How come they don’t know why I read?

Then, few short seconds later, I understand that this question contains a sincere interest in my passion and let’s be honest here, not every person on Earth reads as much as I do, not even close! So, it’s a very valid question. So, here it is, ladies and gentlemen!

Reading is educating!

Reading has educated me, its has broaden my mind and knowledge about many different things in the world. When you think about it, books contain a lot of knowledge. Be it from the early years during the school, where I had to read lots of books, both non-fiction and fiction books to the day today, it has brought the world to me. It has literally brought the world into my living room, bedroom, or to whatever place I have used for reading.

I remember when in school, I was so tired of reading the long lists of mandatory books, and I don’t mean the fiction here, but the school books, mainly non-fiction. When I am looking to my bookshelves at the moment, there are still books of economics, marketing, math and statistics, management, dictionaries etc, then today I am happy that I have gone through all of them. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without them! They have helped me to reach my goals!

I have to admit, that even now, many years after finishing university, I use some of the books from the times of my studies. I occasionally open them to freshen up my practical knowledge with the theory or simply for the reference. I am always happy when somebody asks me if I have this or that book, so they could borrow it for their studies.

I have always liked reading travel books, especially when preparing myself visiting places that I haven’t seen yet. It has given me historical, cultural, religious background of different countries and their people. It satisfies my curiosity about what I’m about to meet.

I’m not a native English speaker and reading has improved my language knowledge. I’m capable of reading in 5 different languages and it has supported my vocabulary in these languages. I’ve learned words and expressions through reading.

Reading is entertaining!

I read because it’s fun! It’s entertaining! Reading can make you laugh, it can make you cry, it can make you feel lost and then find yourself again. Reading creates emotions and thoughts and this is the part of reading which I enjoy most. Reading makes you think of your own life, relating it to the books you read.

A good mystery book or horror book can make your hair raise. A good autobiography can impress you or make you think about the possibilities what your own life throws you. A good historical book can teach you a lot about past worlds, cultures, even people. A good romance can make you feel love, anger, pain, fun, excitement – you can experience multiple emotions because you can relate to it. Yes, you know, it might be fiction, but a well-written book takes you through all humanly possible emotions.

Reading is escapism!

After a long and stressful working day there is nothing better than take a good book, dive into it and forget everything what surrounds you. It’s an excellent way of getting rid of stress and to have a short (or long) escape from daily routines. Reading gives you a way out, if needed. It takes you mind off from the reality. I’m not saying, that you shouldn’t be taking care of your life or whatever daily chores and obligations you have, but what I’m saying, it gives you a way to escape to the worlds unknown, to characters you will fall in love with, to time travelling – you name it, and it’s there. Reading gives you an option to live multiple lives through the stories. I love the saying that I read not because I don’t have a life, but because I choose to have several!

Reading also increases your imagination! It teaches you to think out of the box, because in the books everything is possible!

Reading is fun!

Reading has brought me to other readers. It’s a lot of fun meeting and talking to people who share your passion, who know the books you have read, want to discuss and talk about either characters, experiences, thoughts what they have received while reading!

Reading has brought me to the world of authors! You know, these wonderfully talented people who share their experiences, fantasies, images and worlds with us? Authors, who force us to understand and appreciate the language and the written word? Authors, who give us adorable characters whom we can literally crush on, hate, fall in love with, laugh at? Yes, these people! I have met many authors because of reading and they all have given me more than they ever will realize – pieces of their hearts and minds and their friendship and I personally value it a lot!

Reading has brought me to blogging. And blogging is the reason why I am here today, telling you why do I read.

Last, but not least, I read because I want to! The above reasons and tons of more reasons which I won’t have time to mention, they make reading fun!

What about you? Why do you read?

Thank you so much for Contagious Reads for having me today!

Happy reading!

I enjoyed it a lot. I think there are so many small reasons for reading, and very important ones, so it’s difficut to put them all together and create a single reason. My single reason for reading would probably be – It’s fun!
