It’s been two months since Perry Palomino and Dex Foray’s relationship reached a new turning point, two months since Perry started a new life in Seattle, and two months since their Experiment in Terror show took on a new partner, ex-Wine Babe Rebecca Sims, and found a new level of success. But whenever there is light in their lives, the madness still has a way of coming back in.

When the team is sent back to the stormy Oregon coast to investigate a haunted school, Perry wants to use the opportunity to reconnect with her family and reintroduce Dex into their lives. Only Perry’s not the only one who’s reaching out – her grandmother Pippa has started appearing to her with disturbing warnings and Perry’s presence at the school has ignited a chilling new wave of supernatural phenomenon. Once used a century ago as a sanatorium to house children dying of tuberculosis, the school’s past residents are slowly coming back to life and with one thing on their mind. They want someone to play with, someone to join them. Forever.

Even when dead, some children get whatever they want.

And they want Perry.

Have you even started this series? NO! How are we even friends? I’ve been in love with the series since Darkhouse, which by the way, is still my favorite of the books. Okay, well maybe Red Fox is…. no Dead Sky Morning is, for sure…. okay I love them all almost equally.

Come Alive was the previous book in this series, and while I did love that book, it was not my favorite. I’m a Perry fangirl.  Yep, Perry is my book crush.  Don’t get me wrong Dex is great, but Perry is just awesome.  Dark, morose, metal head, insecure, strong, brave, loyal. That’s Perry. 😀 And Dex too, but Dex let’s his penis think entirely too much for me.

Ashes to Ashes scared the bejeezus out of me!!  I was so bloody excited to be scared again! I know, it’s not normal. But anyway the chill factors are cranked up to 10 from the get go, and then Karina throws it up to 12 by the end.  Ghost kids.  People. G.H.O.S.T. K.I.D.S.  Do you get that? Do you have any idea how freaking scary little kids are?  My daughter has this laugh.  I need to get it on tape, if you heard it in a dark room you’d piss your pants it’s so bloody creepy.  Add on top that these kids are in a sanatorium used to treat TB (thanks Ms. Halle, I’ve had that song stuck in my head for DAYS now!)  Nothing good ever happens in a place where people go to die. There is a secret body chute, and and Karina gives us a very different (and much cooler?) red room of pain. Ahhhhhhh!!!!!!!!! There are several starring ghosts and one of them will haunt me for a very long time.  I’m telling you little kids, just paint them white, and teach them to speak in creepy voices and you can scare you neighbors time and time again. *shudders* *laughs manically while contemplating doing this to random people* *realizes she is thinking to herself in a review* *stops*

Perry and Dex are united front in this book. They are solid, and that makes me a very, very happy girl. And Rebecca as a third wheel is just so much fun.  The three of them have such a great dynamic.

The writing is flawless as always.  Karina is a rock star.  It makes me happy that she is an incredibly fast writer.  It also makes me sad that Dust to Dust the next book is the last in the series.  I’m not ready for it to end.

Please, if you read this blog and go pick up this series.  It’s full of fun quirky characters, thrills, chills, steamy scenes and laughter.  So worth your time and money.

About Karina Halle

Karina Halle is the USA Today Best Selling Author of The Artists Trilogy (On Every Street, Sins & Needles, Shooting Scars, and Bold Tricks) published by Hachette, the Experiment in Terror series, and The Devil’s series published by Diversion.

The daughter of a Norwegian Viking and a Finnish Moomin, Karina Halle grew up in Vancouver, Canada with trolls and eternal darkness on the brain. This soon turned into a love of all things that go bump in the night and a rather sadistic appreciation for freaking people out. Like many of the flawed characters she writes, Karina never knew where to find herself and has dabbled in acting, make-up artistry, film production, screenwriting, photography, travel writing and music journalism. She eventually found herself in the pages of the very novels she wrote (if only she had looked there to begin with).

Karina holds a screenwriting degree from Vancouver Film School and a Bachelor of Journalism from TRU. Her travel writing, music reviews/interviews and photography have appeared in publications such as Consequence of Sound, Mxdwn and GoNomad Travel Guides. She currently lives on an island on the coast of British Columbia where she’s preparing for the zombie apocalypse with her fiance and rescue pup.

Karina is represented by Scott Waxman of the Waxman Leavell Literary Agency

  • Great review, Lori! I keep hearing how epic and intense this series got and I really have to get up to date with it. I did read book 1 a few months ago and it was awesome. I hear it’s nothing compared to what the series is now. It’s definitely RIGHT up my alley, too! I love this shit! 😀
