Bestselling author of the Wicked Lovely books Melissa Marr’s first contemporary YA novel is a twisted southern gothic tale of obsession, romance, and murder. A killer is obsessed with Eva Tilling. Can she stop him, or will he claim her?
When Eva Tilling wakes up in the hospital, she’s confused—who in her sleepy little North Carolina town could have hit her with their car? And why? But before she can consider the question, she finds that she’s awoken with a strange new skill: the ability to foresee people’s deaths when they touch her. While she is recovering from the hit-and-run, Nate, an old flame, reappears, and the two must traverse their rocky past as they figure out how to use Eva’s power to keep her friends—and themselves—alive. But while Eva and Nate grow closer, the killer grows increasingly frantic in his attempt to get to Eva.
For the first time, New York Times bestselling author Melissa Marr has applied her extraordinary talent to contemporary realism. Chilling twists, unrequited obsession, and high-stakes romance drive this Gothic, racy thriller—a story of small-town oppression and salvation. Melissa’s fans, and every YA reader, will find its wild ride enthralling.
I am a huge fan of Melissa Marr’s and have been for years. Not everyone will love her writing, because she takes her time to build up the characters and to set the scene. Her stories don’t always move along at a breakneck speed, but I’m always left feeling like I belong in that world, and have a whole new cast of best friends.
Made For You was the first book of Marr’s that I have read that didn’t require world building. It isn’t fantasy. There aren’t fairies or demons, and there really aren’t many new rules to learn. I assumed the story would have moved along a little faster because those extra details weren’t needed… but that’s not what happened. The story did lag a little because of it. Luckily, the extra time allowed for a believable chemistry to build between the characters.
The plot is FABULOUS! The chapters alternate between Eva and a mysterious fanatic, and the two voices play off each other perfectly. Eva is completely down-to-earth, and easy to sympathize with. When Eva wakes up in the hospital, she finds that she has a new ability to predict when someone is going to die. Don’t expect any kind of scientific explanation for why this has happened to her, and no spiritual significance is suggested either. You pretty much just have to throw yourself into the story and roll with it.
As far as villains go, this one takes the cake! It’s completely terrifying that such a creepy fanatic can exist behind the guise of anyone you meet, or even someone you may have known for years. You start looking at your friends in a whole new light. As much as these alternating chapters freaked me out, I almost wish that I hadn’t known quite so much. I wanted the reveal to wait until the last second, keeping me guessing right until the end. Overall, while not my favorite Marr book, Made For You was a thoroughly creepy read and great for inducing goosebumps!
