Time passes, sins forgotten.
The bodies of the victims long since rotten.

Trapped within the essence of the Headless Horseman by the guilt of slaughtering her best friend, Ireland Crane follows the father of science fiction, HG Wells, in search of freedom from the curse that binds her. Instead, she discovers even he has a hidden agenda. A dark, relentless passion to be reunited with the woman he loves has driven him to manipulate time and a murderous Horseman.

Yet heed my warning, as the Raven flies,
The Hessian will come … and you will die.

All that prevents Ireland from abandoning Wells’ twisted pursuit, or introducing him to her sword, are the undead witches haunting her. Begging for freedom from a vile succubus, the ghoulish coven leads Ireland and her crew on a journey through Salem’s sordid past. There, they learn there is more to Nathaniel Hawthorne’s history than a scarlet letter, and the secret they’ve uncovered seeks to destroy them all.

This series has taken me so far! When I think back to the beginning, to Crane, it feels almost like a different series. I was just starting to get to know Ireland, and the very concept of her being the embodiment of the Headless Horseman seemed a stretch. I rolled with it, because that’s what you do when reading fiction. When I started into Raven, book 2, the cast got considerably larger and more quirky. I was still really enjoying the series; it was dark, sarcastic and fun. All good things!

And then came Steam. Nothing could have prepared me for this. I feel like the entire series came to a head, bringing all of the stress and tension to a roiling climax! Just as in the first two books, Steam alternates between past and present. This book’s past story follows a coven of witches, and I’m dead serious when I say I got chills. My prime reading time is late at night, and I had to put the book down more than once. I started having really vivid dreams that were impossible to shake! So intense! By far, the strongest book in the series!

Now that it’s over, I have to deal with the withdrawal. I’m going to miss Ireland’s sharp wit, not to mention her ragtag band of bizarre characters. What started off as a relatively small cast, started to gather historical figures like a snowball rolling down a hill. And in the end, they all had their part to play. I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about the ending. I maybe need a support group book club to discuss this with. I can’t help but wonder… is this the last we’ll see of Ireland Crane? With just enough loose threads, there will always be the possibility of another book. Not the worst idea. Just sayin’.

  • I love it when a series really brings a story from A to Z – like, some series just drag on and when you look back you realize there was no point to most of it haha. But this sounds like one addicting and intense ride! Awesome review, Lindsay!
