I have a clock for a heart…and the man who put it there tried to take it out.
Time Collectors are modern day genies capable of exchanging wishes for time. Elizabeth Wicker lives within a steampunk world riddled with the supernatural. Among the stories of witches, Bacts, and other monsters, Time Collectors remain as the greatest hushed secret among the noble families. They are temptation’s greatest tools. A contract with a Time Collector is a guaranteed death sentence, and for some the price isn’t worth the prize. But when Elizabeth is struck down by a fatal heart attack, she finds herself trapped beneath a Time Collector’s blade. With no time left to offer, she makes a desperate sacrifice for a second chance at life. If there’s only one truth, it is a Time Collector will always come back to collect.
Even when my schedule is full, I can find time for a book by Jacinta Maree; she really does weave a great story. Having said that, this wasn’t my favorite of her books. That trophy is held by the Immortal Gene series.
The problem I had was that I couldn’t conjure up a vision of the world. At times it was steam-punkish, and my imagination would get started, but then some of the technology would throw me off, and I would be thrown back to a modern image. I just felt like I didn’t belong in this world. There was a lot of plot going on, which became confusing at times. It certainly kept the pace flowing at a breakneck speed, but I almost felt like I would have been fine with moving slowly, taking a breath every now and then to get to know the setting and characters a little bit.
I really enjoyed Elizabeth as a main protagonist. She is still coming to realize her strengths, and she doesn’t wallow in her weaknesses. She no doubt still has a lot of room to grow, and I’m sure that the next book will reveal some of her secrets. The chapters also alternate with a few other characters, which brought a nice change of pace, and a welcome mixture of darkness and light. Characters were still being introduced, right up until the end. It’s a large cast, for sure, but I have a sneaking suspicion that they may not all survive…
The concept of time collectors is fascinating, but I also feel like there is a lot of learn about them. The rules they follow seem to be flexible at times, casting them into shades of grey. Be prepared to feel suspicion for the heroes, and sympathy for the villains. Their roles could change at any moment.
